I have been a cynical towards people who worry about smart meters for a couple years, even was an early adopter nearly 5 years ago. The last year I have been experiencing a chronic sore throat that my doctors can’t explain, my kids are developing learning disabilities, among other strange health issues. The more I read, the more I’m concerned about the microwave radiation the give off.

Wireless smart meters typically produce a typical, relatively potent and very short pulsed RF/microwaves whose biological effects have never been fully tested. 

They emit these millisecond-long RF bursts on average 9,600 times a day with a maximum of 190,000 daily transmissions and a peak level emission two and a half times higher than the stated safety signal [Perlingieri’s italics], as the California utility Pacific Gas & Electric recognized before that State’s Public Utilities Commission. 

Thus people in proximity to a smart meter are at risk of significantly greater aggregate exposure than with a cell phone, not to mention the cumulative levels of RF/microwaves that people living near several meters are exposed to.

Dr Liz Evans, a campaigner, said there are hundreds of studies showing "evidence of harm could be acute", including possible "chronic effects from long term exposure such as cancer, infertility, dementia, genetic damage, immune system dysfunction and damage to foetuses".

“Smart” meters are “hot,” in terms of broadcast power density, and can emit microwaves at levels many times higher than those reported by medical studies to cause serious adverse health effects. 

Film producer Josh del Sol reported in his documentary Take Back Your Power that testing shows a single “smart” meter can produce eight microwatts per centimeter squared (cm2). 

A bank of smart meters can generate up to 19.8 microwatts/cm2 of whole-body radiation exposure. Meantime, modern medical science confirms that a microwave transmission power of only .05 microwatts/cm2 can cause children to suffer headaches, behavioral problems and inability to learn and concentrate.

The frequency of cellular technology microwave radiation corresponds to a wavelength of approximately 30 centimeters, or roughly one foot. This wavelength is thousands of times larger than structures in the brain responsible for mental processes, and so claims that wireless radiation can cause maladies such as “dizziness” or “memory loss” are absurd.

This is not true - for example, AM radio stations - you can use a radio with the same antenna as FM stations to receive these stations.

Your radio can work on the long wave break to convert the sound from the radio station to AM or FM.

It's the same with our brain. ALSO, the "balance center" in our brain can detect electromagnetic waves and activate defense mechanisms the same as in the case of an attack by bacteria or viruses. OF COURSE THE FIGHT IS HOPELESS. Without effect, it sucks huge amounts of energy from the body. All of the above results are "de facto" symptoms of i.a. "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" or "Fibromyalgia." . . related to exposure to electromagnetic fields

In 2010, a 13-nation study commissioned by the World Health Organization found at most a very minimal and partially contradictory link between cancer risk and heavy cell-phone usage. Along this line, concerns that cell phone usage by pregnant mothers endangers their fetuses are wildly exaggerated.

No comment required. You can find countless studies and explanations linking cancer to electromagnetic fields, especially cell phones and cell towers. You can find information from the northern part of Europe (Sweden, Denmark, Norway...) about the consequences of using mobile communication. These countries were the first to implement cellular communication on a nationwide scale.

It is also instructive to compare the radiation levels of smart meters with those of other wireless devices. Smart meters only transmit data for roughly 1.4 seconds per day, at very low wattage. And even if one stands less than one meter (3 feet) from a smart meter when it broadcasts its data, the resulting microwave exposure is 550 times less than standing in front of an active microwave oven, and 1100 times less than holding an active cell phone to one’s ear.

But even these reckonings are extremely conservative, because no one spends his or her life camped within three feet of a smart meter. Instead, such devices are typically on the outside of a residence, many feet from humans. Thus, given the incontestable law that microwave intensity decreases as the square of distance from the source, this means that exposure from smart meters is hundreds or thousands of times less than the figures in the previous paragraph. Indeed, 20-year exposure to radiation from smart meters is no greater than a single 30-minute cell phone call.

This one is especially good. Since the signal from the Smart Meter is so weak and how is it able to communicate over a longer distance with a closer network access point? It is true that the Smart Meter can automatically adjust the power level to maintain good communication. Also, the signal is sent and received in very short intervals (milliseconds) separated by a few seconds of inactivity. This signal has a very high energy. Comparing the total energy in e.g. 1 minute - it will be very low indeed. Surprised?

I will add that the Smart Meter transmits in 360 degrees - in all directions. This means that you will definitely be affected by any smart meter in your area.

The statement that “Thousands of studies, both epidemiological and experimental in humans, show no increase in cancer cases as a result of exposure to radio waves of low intensity…” is false

In fact, only a few such studies - two dozen case-control studies of cell phone use, certainly not thousands - have shown no increase in cancer rates, and most were funded by the wireless industry. In addition, these reassuring studies had significant experimental design flaws, mainly the fact that the populations observed were too small and were followed for too short a time.

Research not funded by the industry clearly showed a significant increase in cancer rates among people who suffered from long-term exposure to low-level microwaves, especially those transmitted through radio antennas.

The effects are best documented in published meta-analyses, which include grouped results from several different studies: These analyzes have consistently found an increased risk of brain cancer among regular cell phone users who have been exposed to microwaves for at least ten years. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable.

For example, the 2009 Hardell-Carlberg study found a consistent association between cell phone or cordless phone use and two types of head tumors, grades I-IV astrocytoma and acoustic neuroma. The authors "found a particularly high risk for people who started using cell phones or cordless phones before the age of 20, although based on low numbers."

It is no evidence that Electrosensitivity is related to exposition to Smart Meters or Cellular Communication.

The public's concerns about wireless smart meters are legitimate. They are supported by various medical authorities such as the Santa Cruz County (California) Department of Public Health. These authorities are concerned about the growing number of citizens claiming to have developed an electro-hypersensitivity disorder (EHS), especially since many of them developed symptoms after installing such meters (most people take some time to make the connection between the two events).

Due to the increasing popularity of wireless devices such as mobile phones and Wi-Fi internet, people have been increasingly exposed to ambient microwaves since the turn of the millennium. Therefore, the massive deployment of smart grids could expose large sections of the population to alarming risk scenarios without their consent. According to seven studies carried out in six European countries between 2002 and 2004, around 10% of Europeans became sensitive to electricity. The most famous person to publicly reveal his electrosensitivity is Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and retired director of the World Health Organization (WHO).

While there is no consensus on the origin and mechanisms of EHS, many physicians and other professionals around the world have realized that the symptoms of EHS (neurological, dermatological, acoustic, etc.) seem to be triggered by exposure to EMF levels well below current international exposure limits , which are determined solely on the basis of short-term thermal effects (3). Organizations such as the Austrian Medical Association and the American Academy of Environmental Medicine have recognized that the ideal treatment for EHS is to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Therefore, caution should be exercised as the growing variety of RF/microwave emissions produced by many wireless devices, such as smart meters, has never been tested for their potential biological effects
